Photo Restoration Services
We can restore most damage from your photos. We can start with your photos, slides or negatives and scan them, or you can send us digital image files for restoration.
- Colorization. We create realistically colored digital photos from black and white images. An example is shown below.
- Damage repair. Cracks, scratches, and tears in digital images from prints and film can be repaired.
- Fading. Faded or worn film and prints can be repaired.
- Mold, mildew and fungus removal. Older film, particularly slides, frequently are damaged by mold, mildew and fungus as a result of being stored in warm and moist environments (like basements).
- Dirt, dust and fingerprint removal.
We classify our services for photo restoration into five broad classes. Every image is different and will require individual treatment. After we have your images and we understand your goals and requirements, we will be able to give you a solid estimate on the restoration or recovery costs.
- Recovery. Often glass mounted slides show extensive signs of aging and poor storage. There may be cracks in the glass, dirt embedded in the film under the glass, mold, mildew and fungus on the film, cloudy glass, and contact points between the glass and film (causing spots, newton rings and lines). We handle these slides through a process that we call "recovery". We first scan the slide after only a basic cleaning of the outside of the glass. This assures that we capture the image in the unlikely event that the film is damaged in subsequent steps. We then remove the film from the glass mount, clean the film as necessary, and put it into a new plastic slide mount. We rescan the film in this new mount. With this rescanned image, we can restore any remaining damage in the digital image. Often this is enough to produce a satisfactory image.
- Colorization. We will work with you to determine appropriate colors to use to turn your black and white photos into color. See the examples below.
- Basic Restoration. For images with minor dirt, damage and fading.
- Moderate Restoration. For images with moderate dirt, damage and fading. Images may include some damage due to mold, mildew and fungus. Heavy fading or discolorization.
- Extensive Restoration. For images with major dirt, damage and fading. Images may include tears, large areas of mold, mildew or fungus. severe fading or discolorization.
We return your film and digital video using a reliable, trackable carrier. Your film is treated with utmost care while in our hands.

These beautiful images were provided by Charles U. Lowe. They were shot in Afghanistan and India in 1949. The are on 120 (6x6) transparency film. They were mounted in glass covered slide mounts. The deterioriration over the years included heavily faded film, cracks in the glass, embedded dirt, fungus, mold and mildew. Most troubling, some of the film had dried and crinkled to touch the glass in wavy patterns. We scanned these slides without removing the film from the mounts. Our fear was that the film would be fragile and fall apart without the support of the glass mounts. With these images along with roughly 100 more, we worked with Charles to produce a wonderful book of photos and Charles' written remembrances of his travels in the area. The result is quite stunning.
Thanks to Mr. Lowe for providing us with the chance to work with these wonderful images and for permission to include them here. |
