4x5 and Large Format Slides and NegativesThere are literally hundreds of film formats. Many, particularly older films and films for professional use, are "large". The most common format that we see is 4" x 5" negatives and slides - or 4x5. These large format films are still used for fine art, portraits, weddings, landscape photography. The large film area allows for capturing tremendous detail, allowing large prints without seeing the effect of film grain. Our Large Film Format Scanning ProcessWhen you send us your large format films for scanning to CD or DVD, we scan them with all the care and experience that we apply in our 35mm scanning, but with key additions that make all the difference when scanning these larger format films. Though most large format films are unmounted, we can scan both mounted and unmounted large format films (up to 8x10). We start by cleaning the film using only compressed air. For unmounted films, we sometimes place the film in a glass covered film adapter if necessary to keep the film flat and motionless during scanning, assuring a sharp focus edge-to-edge across the entire film area. This is critical to achieving good results on some of these larger films. Next, we scan these films using a high-resolution professional quality flatbed film scanners. We employ dust and scratch removal technologies during scanning of color films to make the digital images shine. When we have finished scanning your 4x5 or other large format films, we place preview versions of the images online for you to view. After you have had a chance to preview the scanned images online, we return the digital images to you on archival quality DVDs or CDs (along with the original negatives) using a reliable, trackable carrier. Your films are treated with utmost care while they are in our hands. Large Format Film Scanning PricesNote that we consider an film that is wider than 60mm or longer than 84mm to be "large format". These films will be scanned in our professional flatbed film scanners. Films smaller than 60mm x 84mm will be scanned in a medium format film scanner, as described on this page describing our medium format film scanning process. Given the large size of the film, digital file sizes can grow very large if scanned at 4800 PPI. We can help you determine appropriate scanning resolutions based on your needs. In most cases, scanning at 2400 PPI is sufficient.
