35mm Slide (Transparency Film) Scanning Service

35mm slides ready for scanning35mm Slide Films

There are a variety of slide (transparency) film formats that are mounted in 2" by 2" slide mounts. Standard 35mm film, such as Kodachrome, Ektachrome and Ansochrome slides from the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's are commonly in paperboard mounts, usually stamped with Kodak identifying information. Other film manufacturers such as Fuji also may be identified on the slide mount. 126, 127 and 110 slide films are also mounted in these standard 2" by 2" mounts, allowing them to be projected with the same equipment as the standard 35mm films. Rarely, we see 110 slides mounted in smaller 1" by 1" mounts. These various mounted slide films are shown in the table at the bottom of the page.

Our 35mm Slide Scanning Process

When you send us your 35mm slides for scanning to CD or DVD, we scan them with all the care that comes from a passion for preserving photographic memories and experience from performing hundreds of thousands of 35mm film scans.

We start by cleaning your slides using only compressed air.

We scan your standard 35mm slides and 110 slides using the Nikon 5000 ED high-resolution, dedicated film scanner. This dedicated film scanner gets better results than a flatbed scanner by employing optics and mechanical structures expressly catered to scanning 35mm films. As part of the scanning process, we employ dust and scratch removal technologies to make the digital images shine.

For 126 slides, 127 slides, and "superslides", we have a choice regarding how we scan. We can scan them in the same scanners that we use for standard 35mm slides. This works well, but crops the slide to the same size as a standard 35mm slide, losing some of the area around the border of the film frame. For many snapshot images, this is acceptable because the subject of the slides is generally in the center of the frame. Alternatively, we can place the mounted 126 or 127 slides in a carrier and scan them in a Nikon 9000 ED high-resolution medium format film scanner. This method captures the full frame area of these larger slides. Scanning in this way is more expensive, however. If you send 126 or 127 slides to us for scanning, we will call to discuss this choice with you before we do any scanning.

For 110 slides in 1" x 1" slide mounts, we place the mounted slides into a carrier and scan using the Nikon 9000 ED high-resolution medium format film scanner.

Following scanning, we perform a series of post-scan processing steps. This includes color correction, exposure correction and careful hand cropping. If your slides are faded, we may employ sophisticated color restoration technologies that can really bring faded and color-shifted images back to life. Even after scanning thousands of faded slides, we often still find the results absolutely stunning!

When we have finished scanning your 35mm slides, we place preview versions of the images online for you to view. After you have had a chance to preview the scanned images online, we return the digital images to you on archival-quality DVDs or CDs (along with the original negatives) using a reliable, trackable carrier. Your slides are treated with utmost care while they are in our hands.
