35mm Negative Films
35mm film was introduced in the 1930's and came into prominence in the 1960's. With the proliferation of inexpensive 35mm cameras in the 1970's and 1980's, 35mm negative film became the most commonly used film format. The 35mm negative frame is 24mm x 36mm, giving a good compromise between convenience and print qualities. The format of a 35mm negative strip is shown below. Most film processing includes cutting the roll of 35mm negative frames into strips containing 4-6 frames for easy storage.
Our 35mm Negative Scanning Process
When you send us your compact films for scanning to CD or DVD, we scan them with all the care and experience that we apply in our 35mm slide scanning, but with key additions that make all the difference when scanning these negative films.
We start by cleaning the negatives using only compressed air. Next, we scan these 35mm negatives using a high-end high-resolution Nikon 5000 ED dedicated film scanner (not a flatbed scanner). We employ dust and scratch removal technologies during scanning to make the digital images shine. The scanning hardware and software converts the negative image on the film to a normal positive image and removes the orange mask coloring of the negative.
After completing the scanning, we perform a number of important post-scanning processing steps that assure you the highest quality digital image from your 35mm negatives. We perform color correction (including removing the effect of the film's orange mask), exposure correction, and careful hand cropping. On images that benefit from its use, we employ grain and noise reduction techniques. This makes a signifcant difference in some images, particularly those on high-speed negative film (e.g., 400 ASA film).
When we have finished scanning your 35mm negatives and processing the resulting digital images, we place preview versions of the images online for you to view. After you have had a chance to preview the scanned images online, we return the digital images to you on DVDs or CDs (along with the original negatives) using a reliable, trackable carrier. Your negatives are treated with utmost care while they are in our hands.
